The most beautiful work of February: the wonderful restoration of a cotto floor
Let's discover together the interesting phases of the restoration of a precious cotto floor.
The best work of the month leads us to visit the “Collecammino” farm, immersed in the green of the Aurunci Mountains, at 700 m above sea level and 20 km from the coast of Sperlonga. The traditional uniqueness of these places finds its natural fulfillment in the magic of this company and its restaurant that is its flagship: Ai Pozzi di Lenola restaurant.
Both structures, combined with the magic of these places and the surrounding countryside, offer breathtaking terraces, cosy rooms, large rooms that shine in their cotto and wood frames. So, it’s precisely for the restoration of these splendid spaces and cotto floors, that the owners of the company have requested the intervention of the professionals of Am Servizi.
Before discovering all the phases of the intervention performed by talented artisans on this wonderful cotto floor, let’s try to understand how much and why this material is so loved and used to enhance the beauty and elegance of both rustic and modern spaces.
Cotto floor: unique and delicate material
First of all, if we think about cotto we must notice that some of the most beautiful Italian floors have been created thanks to the characteristics and versatility of this unique material.
The cotto is one of the most used coatings in construction, and even if its origins are ancient, still today its peculiarity is recognized all over the world.
Its production derives from a particular clay cooking treatment that only skilled artisan masters can achieve.
As a first step, the clay is mixed with water with the help of special kneading machines. Depending on the processing used, the cotto can be defined:
- industrial cotto: machines are used to draw the material;
- handmade cotto: the production is done only with the help of traditional tools such as the press and the roller;
- handmade cotto: made exclusively by hand, this cotto is worked without any tools.
After the mixture, we pass to the cooking that takes place in ovens whose temperatures vary according to the type of clay.
Similarly, the composition of cotto differs depending on the area where the clay is excavated; in fact it depends on the color difference and the grain size of the material. Clays with a high percentage of iron oxides will give life to red cotto. On the contrary, a raw material with limestone, will provide a clearer and more porous final result.
But in addition to its particular uniqueness, it is always necessary to remind that the cotto, being a natural material, is also very delicate. For this reason, it must be preserved from wear and contact with various corrosive substances. In order to preserve a cotto floor, it is essential to carry out constant and accurate maintenance. That’s because, being a natural material and having a particularly porous surface, it tends to absorb liquids and make the moisture perspire.
The flooring material at Ai Pozzi di Lenola restaurant, on which the treatment was carried out, is really a very fine cotto. Let’s discover all the phases.
The intervention on the cotto floor at Ai Pozzi di Lenola restaurant
As the first phase of the work, the artisans of the company that carried out the work, Am Servizi, considered the particularly compromised state of the flooring. So, decided to carry out a deep and descaling wash.
The whole cotto floor was treated with VIACEM and with BROWN BUFFER, this treatment allowed to remove the most stubborn dirt and stains from the surface.
VIACEM is a strong acid descaling product for cotto and terracotta surfaces. This product is used to eliminate deeply and perfectly all the efflorescence, laying residues, paints. Compared to muriatic acid it exhales much less corrosive fumes, so it does not risk ruining the cotto surface. Before use, it is recommended to perform a test on the material to check the resistance of the product.
Once the washing was finished, which brought to light the original and natural aspect of the cotto, the professionals applied two coats of TUSCANIA OIL: a product for the “wet-effect” stain protection of cotto both indoors and outdoors. An oil-wax impregnator that saturates the porosity of the material without leaving superficial films.
As a last step, to prevent and preserve the beauty and the particular characteristics of the cotto floor and considering the area with high foot traffic, POLIFIN product – a shiny anti-dirt and anti-wear finisher for stone materials – was distributed over the entire surface with a cloth.
This product in resinous emulsion gives the surface a constant protection and a wonderful shiny effect.
At the end of the treatment, the result is surprising; the terracotta floor will remain beautiful, shiny and protected for a long and long time.
